Taylor Swift’s Music ‘Disappointing’ Says Pet Shop Boy
Taylor Swift’s Music ‘Disappointing’ could be a shocking headline to read if you’re a Swifty, or anyone that has access to social media. Everyone knows someone who is a fan of Taylor Swift. Planetary rules state the only one allowed to diss is Taylor, through her music, about all of the jerks who have hurt her. Please, don’t shoot the messenger as this blogger reports a shocking turn of events. One notable music star is politely commenting on another music star. Pet Shop Boys lead singer Neil Tennant calls Taylor Swift’s music ‘disappointing’.
Is Taylor Swift’s Music ‘Disappointing?’
Personally, I do not find Taylor Swift’s music disappointing. I think it is fun, catchy pop music. Now in full disclosure, I have not heard any tracks off her new album. I did meet her many years ago backstage at one of her concerts. She was delightful, engaging and sweet, just as she is when we see her in public on stage, one on one, and on television.
Why would Pet Shop Boys lead singer Neil Tennant call Taylor Swift’s music ‘disappointing’?
The Taylor Swift Phenomenon
We can’t argue the fact that Taylor is a pop music icon, that is a force of nature. Watching the NFL playoffs proved that, with her dating Travis Kelce. While her music doesn’t talk to me, it does connect to tens of millions, with authenticity. So bravo Taylor!
But let me offer you one interesting foot note. During the peak of the Beatles and Michael Jackson careers you can make the case that most of the pop music listening population during those periods have heard of at least one song, from those pop music icons. I’m not sure we can say the same for Taylor. There are millions and millions that have of course, have heard of Taylor Swift, but may never have heard one of her songs.
Neil Tennant calls Taylor Swift’s Music ‘Disappointing’
It’s rare these days to see an artist stick one’s neck out and courtique Taylor publically. With social media, one can set one up for a massive backlash. But hitmaker Neil Tennant of the Pet Shop Boys shared his admiration and his courtique of Taylor.
According to People.com:
“Taylor Swift sort of fascinates me as a phenomenon because she’s so popular, and I sort of quite like the whole thing, but then when I listen to the records … for a phenomenon as big, where are the famous songs? What’s Taylor Swift’s ‘Billie Jean’?” Tennant said during the panel, with Pet Shop Boys keyboardist Chris Lowe sitting next to him on stage.
“I like the fact that it brings all these people together, even multi-generational, but I think the one disappointing thing is the music, not the lyrics, the music,” he said.
Giving the Tortured Poets Department hitmaker some credit, Tennant noted that “she’s got a great voice by the way, and the production is beautiful.”
Neil Tennant, like anyone is entitled to their opinion. Every generation thinks their generation is the best. As you may have noticed, Neil didn’t mention anyone else current, other than Taylor.
Maybe in 2064, a 74 year old Taylor Swift will say: I think today’s Taylor AI is not as good as the real me, back in 2024.
