Vermont State Is Getting Weird Al
Yes, it’s true. Vermont State is getting Weird Al. Push over Harvard, your Taylor Swift course has some polka competition.
In this upside down, you can’t make this stuff up, world, finally sanity is taking charge. In a stroke of genius, Vermont State is getting Weird Al, the course. According to upi.com, professors at VTSU were inspired with Harvard adding a course studying Taylor Swift:
The class, led by VTSU Lyndon Music and Performing Arts Professor Brian Warwick, is titled “Weird Al and his Polkas,” which the school said “humorously echoes” the title of Harvard University’s “Taylor and her World.”
But the professor is being totally serious.
The Genius of Weird Al
Before Weird Al became the parody song king in the 1980’s, there were a few before that inspired Al’s unique talent to take a hit song’s original melody, write new, original humerous words, and then perform them. Why would a mature adult do this? Ask Michael Jackson, (if he were here) Madonna, Don McLean and George Lucas who gladly approved their brands to get the Weird Al treatment. It has become a badge of honor to get parodied by Weird Al. Hits like, Eat It and Fat, which are the Jackson song parodies and Like A Surgeon, the parody of Madonna’s song, Like A Virgin, became actual radio hits, and even better, videos.
Weird Al Star Wars Parody
The most stunning Weird Al parody came in 1999. Weird Al released a parody of Don McLean’s eight minute smash American Pie called The Saga Begins. The song used the melody of McLean’s monster hit, but created an entirely new story, singing the entire plot of Star Wars: Episode 1-The Phantom Menace. By the way, it was from the point of view from Obi Wan. Don McLean loved it so much, he reportedly said “I almost stumble into it when singing American Pie, LIVE, because my kids would sing his version so often.”
“My, my, this here Anikan guy, maybe Vader someday later, but now he’s a small fry.” I’m already singing it.
Weird: The Al Yankovic Story
In 2022, Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliff starred in Weird: The Al Yanovic Story was streamed on Prime Video. The movie won two Prime Time Emmy’s, one for Outstanding Television Movie and one for Outstanding Music Composition.
Yes, Vermont State Is Getting Weird Al, the course. In the spirit of Al, it wins my award for brilliance in being a subtle parody of a real college course. Bravo to Vermont State for showing that there’s a little Weird Al in all of us, and it’s ok to be a little weird.
Some may call it unique.
