In his own words on a Sirius XM podcast, Billy said it’s not my last show there, ever! The iconic star wants to make sure that his fans know that it’s the last show of his residency at MSG. But let’s take a look at his amazing 150 show run in his own backyard.
Billy Joel At Madison Square Garden
Way back in December 2013, Billy Joel joined the storied ranks of The New York Knicks and The Rangers. He became a franchise of Madison Square Garden, commiting to playing one show every single month! In 2014, history was in the making. It’s ten years later, and Billy will wrap up this iconic residency this year, in July. Basically, 2024 is the year, of Billy Joel.
According to MSG.com, Billy says:
“When this franchise run at Madison Square Garden began in January 2014, I said I’d play one show a month ‘as long as the demand continues.’ I never imagined I’d still be playing one show a month 10 years later – it’s a testament to my amazing fans, and the 1.6 million people from around the world who have already been part of this historic residency. If you do the math, Billy will end this iconic run with 150 lifetime shows, 100, for this residency. He truly is the MSG house band. If you don’t believe me, Google “Billy Joel’s house.”
Madison Square Garden could be the most famous arena in the world. It holds 19,500 people. It is an incredible testament to Billy Joel’s iconic staying power and bravery to commit to performing one show per month. What residency at that scale lasts ten years?
Billy Joel’s MSG Record
According to people.com, Billy broke a record long before 2024:
Joel initially performed at the arena on Dec. 14, 1978, and later set the record for most consecutive performances by any artist (12) in 2006 (a record he’s since broken). He played his 65th lifetime show at the Garden in 2015 and set another record for “most lifetime performances by an artist” at the venue. Those accomplishments earned him banners in MSG’s rafters, which are replaced each month with each performance.
Billy Joel’s Final Show On CBS
CBS Television will be on hand to record this month’s March 28 show, and will broadcast it next month. CBS.com says it will broadcast his 100th March 28, MSG show.
