Millie Bobby Brown’s Damsel Is Delightfully Surprising
You could call out Millie Bobby Brown’s Damsel on it’s predictable Netflix level C+to B- graphics, or lack of story connection. But being a Stranger Things fan, how could I not give the former eleven year old, turned twenty year old, a chance?
With today’s overdone green-screen Marvel like movies, I don’t need over-the-top graphics any more. On a rainy Saturday, I want to feel good for a little over two hours on my couch.
Damsel did just that. I gave it a chance. and yes, said a few times, “I didn’t see that comin.” The movie’s title is almost saterical. Damsel is not your typical damsel in distress movie.
‘Damsel’ Spoiler!
The first time we saw Brown act was when she played Eleven on Things, at the age of eleven. Watching Millie act now as a grown woman made me feel like I was watching a neighborhood kid make it in the big time. Her performance in Damsel was impressive on many levels. First, like many scenes in Stranger Things, she’s alone on the screen for much of the movie. It reminded me of Tom Hanks in Cast Away.
Surprise number one finds Elodie (Brown) finding herself lost and alone in a dragons lair. We won’t tell you how she got there, which is our first surprise. She finds herself trying to escape the movie villian, a fire breathing dragon who talks. That was suprise number two. Again, we don’t want to spoil it for you, as you will see, the dragon provides many surprises as Elodie’s journey unfolds. Like in Hanks in Cast Away, Elodie uses resourses she finds in the lair to aid her escape, including unlikely allies who befriend her. No, not Wilson.
One of the wonderful treats in Damsel is the voice of the dragon, provided brilliantly by deep, wrapy-voiced actress Shohreh Aghdashloo. You will see another familiar face as well.
‘Damsel’ Takeaways
- Damsel is feel good adventure, leaving no questions needed to be answered.
- Brown’s performance is movie worthy. For me, the graphics get a B.
- The dragon fear factor is more Harry Potter than Game Of Thrones. But for kids, the dragon is big with a couple of scenes that may not suitable for younger children.
- You’ll enjoy a family connection and appreciate some girl-power, sisterhood, from an unlikely sister!
If you want to be a hyper critic, go ahead. But if you want a feel good, roller coaster ride of twists and turns Millie Bobby Brown’s “Damsel” is surpringly good. (Spoiler! The trailer gives away a surprise!)
