There are some legendary snacks out there. But if I’m going to be honest, I think some of them are doing too much. Do we really need all these random flavors and additions to the classics? What about some of the merch? Is it brilliant marketing or a case of “doing too much?” You decide.

Most Popular Legendary Snacks

There are some Legendary Snacks out there. The snacks that have stood the test of time. They’re the go-to snacks from your childhood, the ones that got you through your teens after school, and maybe helped you out with the munchies in college and beyond. And yes, there are some that are the most popular.

Most popular in Massachusetts

HubScore released the list of the most popular snacks in the country, as well as those state-by-state. They surveyed 3,000 Americans from Feb 1st – Feb 20th, 2024 to find out each states favorite snacks.

Nationwide, the most popular snack is Rice Crispies Treats. Gotta say, that surprises me a little. They are pretty damn delicious though. Looks like we agree here in Massachusetts, as it was #1 here as well. The rest of the top 5 in Mass: Doritos, Cheetos, Goldfish, and Tostitos.

Interesting Snack Facts

I just love random fun facts. So of course I had to look for some great snack facts. Here are some of my favorites.

  • Chocolate chip cookies were invented by accident. Ruth Graves Wakefield was a chef at the Toll House Inn in Whitman, MA. She was trying to make a chocolate cookie but ran out of melting chocolate. She then chopped up some Nestle’s chocolate bars, put them in the dough, and the rest they say is history.
  • Goldfish crackers were a tribute to the inventor’s wife. Oscar J. Kamby was looking for a way to use leftover cheese. He decided to make a cracker and shaped it like a fish because it was a gift to his wife. She’s a Pisces.
  • Potato chips were invented after a customer complaint. George Crum was a chef in New York. A customer complained that the french fries were too thick so he sliced some potatoes very thinly and fried them crispy. The customer loved them.

Legendary Snacks Doing Too Much?

I don’t know about you, but sometimes I get annoyed when I hear about new food products. For example, I get irrationally upset when I hear about new Oreo flavors. Especially ones that aren’t chocolate. I know, I know. It’s ridiculous, but I can’t help myself.

Here are some legendary snacks that have made me question if they’re doing too much.

  • Kit Kat Pink Lemonade

We've Got the Deets on the New Kit Kat Flavor

Kit Kat Pink Lemonade will be hitting shelves this summer. Find out what this new Kit Kat flavor is going to taste like and when you'll be able to buy Pink Lemonade Kit Kat.

Is it me or is Kit Kat doing too much? One part of me says yes, but then the lemon-lover in me says, maybe not. There have been A LOT of flavors of Kit Kats. In fact, in Japan, it’s so popular they have over 300 flavors. Kit Kat recently had a Lemon Crisp flavor that I actually tasted and liked. It was a little too sweet, but I liked it and would give it a 7 out of 10. The Pink Lemonade flavor is a limited summer flavor so get it before it’s gone.

Is Kit Kat doing too much? In this case, I’ll say no until I try it. They may have a lot of flavors, but because they still give us variations of the original like minis and giant ones, it works for me.

  • Pringles x Crocs Crush Boot

I have no issue with all the flavors that Pringles comes out with. If I try it and don’t like it, I just keep it moving. But sometimes there are marketing moves that I just don’t get. This is one of them. I don’t get the Crocs partnership. Actually the regular Crocs I get if you’re a huge Pringles fan. But this Crocs Crush Boot??? Definitely just to get attention which I’m giving it, so I guess I’m part of the problem. Lol

Pringles doing too much? In the case of this boot. Yes. Pringles is doing too much.

  • Dunkin' Track Suits

I love my Dunkin! Gotta have it on a daily basis. I’m not going to get into the food and drink, because I need to jump right to this Dunkin’ track suit. I get it. Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, Tom Brady, & J.Lo. Lots of celebrity power. But this track suit? Again, it made me irrationally angry. Yes I know, I’m the problem. I just need to know who bought this and where are they wearing it.

Is Dunkin’ doing too much? With this track suit…absolutely! Dunkin’ my love for you is unwavering, but I just can’t with this track suit.

  • Oreo Sour Patch Kids

Ok, here’s where I’m sure there is a great divide. I know that there are a ton of people who absolutely love all the different flavors. Personally, I am not one of them. Oreos are one of those things that I only like the classic. I don’t even like the double stuff ones. This Sour Patch Kids Oreo is their latest and I’m sure there’s a market for it. I actually love Sour Patch Kids, but just not feeling the combo. There are reportedly over 85 different flavors of Oreos.

Is Oreo doing too much? For me, 100% yes! And by the way, here’s another instance of Oreo “doing too much.”

You Can Now Enjoy the Flavors of Oreo in a Glass of Red Wine, Thanks to Barefoot

Barefoot Wine's new Oreo-flavored red wine will be available exclusively online while supplies last starting on Thursday, December 9.

  • Doritos alcohol

We just saw Oreos wine, and now we have Doritos Empirical Liquor. Made with Malted Barley, Belgian Saison Yeast 2, & Doritos Nacho Cheese, it reportedly tastes like the real thing. The flavor profile is described as: nacho cheese, corn tostada, umami, and a hint of acidity. Liquid Doritos in a glass.

Doritos doing too much? I think I will leave my final opinion until I get to taste it. Given that I would at least try it, I’ll give them a break and say they’re not doing too much. For now.

  • Cheetos beer rim

Cheetos always has a lot going on. I will go on record saying that Cheetos are one of my absolute favorite snacks. I love the Flaming Hot Crunchy ones. I also love Cheetos Puffs…stale. I’ll leave the bag open for a day or two and they taste SO good! Anyway, that said, Cheetos pushes the limits that might be a little too far for me. Worldwide, there are about 135 different flavors and shapes and sizes. But then Cheetos does things like beer rims and milkshakes, and they lose me.

Is Cheetos doing too much? I’m at 65% yes, but those stale Cheetos have me hanging onto that 35%.

  • Lay's x IHOP Rootie Tootie Fresh and Fruity

I love Lay’s potato chips. We always had the “yellow bag” in my house and my mother has them at her house to this day. It’s a comfort food for me. I’m a Lay’s “yellow bag” purist. I will definitely try the other flavors they have. Some I’ve tried and loved are salt and vinegar, and dill pickle. I love that they even have contests to develop new flavors. I would try any and all of them. They have a bunch of “fake flavors on their Instagram that I would totally try. Like this one…

Is Lay’s doing too much? Not at all. Keep coming with all the different flavors. As long as you leave my classic alone, we’re good. I also hope they turn some of those fake flavors on IG into real flavors.
