Marisa Tomei Coming To Rhode Island Comic Con
A Marisa Tomei Rhode Island visit maybe the first time an A list celebrity graced the Ocean State since Taylor Swift bought her mansion in Watch Hill.
When we say the name Marisa Tomei, for me, my mind instantly goes back to 1993.
My Cousin Vinny
The movie: My Cousin Vinny. I know you don’t need a fresher, but I did. Oddly, we dug out our Blue Ray and re watched it last month. The movie holds up, thirty years later.
Tomei played the wisecracking Mona Lisa Vito, the adorable girlfriend of Vinny Gambini played by Joe Pesci. Tomei’s performance as an unlikely motor-head, who’s testimony won a court case that saved the life of Vinny’s cousin, not to mention Vinny’s law career, won her an OSCAR for Best Supporting Actress. But hindsight is 20/20.
The Critics Were Wrong About My Cousin Vinny
I always say that sometimes, we shouldn’t trust the experts. Walt Disney was told he had no imagination, and Oprah was told she would never make it on television. Would you believe that the critics panned My Cousin Vinny?
In a 2022 Rolling Stone article as the movie was approaching it’s 30th Anniversary, the article looked back at the reviews of the iconic movie. But it wasn’t iconic, to the critics.
Famous movie critic Roger Ebert was not impressed: “It’s the kind of movie home video was invented for.” “Not worth the trip to the theater, but slam it into the VCR and you get your rental’s worth.” Entertainment Weekly’s Owen Gleiberman called it “pure no-brain bunk.”
The movie made a respectable (back then) $53 million at the box office, and as mentioned won a young up and coming Tomei an Oscar.
But Vinny, isn’t her only success story! Insert MARVEL COMICS.
