HBO’s Perry Mason Deserves A Chance
SPOILER!
Some of you may remember Raymond Burr’s Perry Mason, as a pleated pants, slick lawyer who brilliantly won every case with his, rapid fire, emotional clipped tones, keeping everyone in the courtroom and watching at home on the edge of their seat, for his bombshell reveals.
HBO’s Mason takes welsh actor Matthew Rhys (The Americans) who plays a young Perry Mason, an insecure up and comer, who despite his brilliance never took the bar, to stay and run a run down family farm, making a living as a clumsy private investigator, for his mentor, a struggling but kind hearted lawyer played perfectly by veteran John Lithgow. Rhys, who loses the welsh accent totally immediately lures us down his pathetic path rooting for his character to dump the farm and use his mind to take over the cities biggest case: a child obduction gone wrong.
Unlike the 1980’s Perry Mason Movies, this is no Murder She Wrote. There’s a reason this is on HBO. It’s more than just a mystery. It’s a thriller with violence, vulgarity, sex and sadness.
But by the end, us Perry Mason fans get what we want, Perry in a suit, shaven and in a courtroom, with the icing on the cake, ending with the original Perry Mason theme. That’s just season one.
Court adjourned.
