Elton John with Queen and Axl Rose 1992 Freddie Mercury tribute
I came across this amazing forgotten video the other day that I have to share. The year was 1992, and the biggest band at the time was Guns and Roses. They were on a world wide tour promoting their double album (or cd’s after all it was the 90’s) “Use Your Illusion” that was selling out venues everywhere.
Side note; my wife and I saw Guns and Roses at the old Worcester Centrum and they were great!
The concert is still talked about today.
The huge Concert for Life was both a tribute to the late Freddie Mercury who had passed away from AIDs in the fall of 1991 and a fundraiser to raise money and awareness of the dreaded disease.
Axl Rose who arguably is one of the greatest front men/lead singers was a huge fan of both Freddie Mercury and Elton John jumped at the chance to get on stage with Elton to sing one of Queen’s greatest songs Bohemian Rhapsody.
“Bohemian Rhapsody” topped the UK Singles charts for nine weeks and had over 1 million units sold by the end of January 1976. It was able to top the charts again for another five weeks upon the death of Freddie Mercury in 1991, also becoming the third bestselling single in the UK.
The song got a massive bump back up the charts after the release of the movie in 2018 with millions of downloads and increased radio air play but not many people remember or have ever seen this awesome performance of Elton, Queen and Axl Rose belting out the all time classic Bohemian Rhapsody.
Axl Rose appearance was a surprise to a lot of the crowd.
When Axl comes on stage roughly 3/4 into the song, the crowd erupts with joy and surprise, apparently because it was a surprise cameo. I hope you enjoy this tour de force as much as I did!
