If you’re over the age of 35 you probably remember where you were on July 16, 1999 the day that John F. Kennedy Jr, his wife Carolyn and her sister Lauren Bessette all died that tragic day in a plane crash off Martha’s Vineyard. That’s when we all were concerned with tragic death of JFK Jr.
I was at a local Gold’s Gym getting in a Saturday morning workout in Cary, North Carolina. As the father of three young girls that were all under 9 at the time, I cherished the chance to get out a little workout time.
The tv’s were on the local news channel that day like any other, but suddenly there was the dreaded “Breaking News” logo and I along with everyone else at the gym looked up to see what was happening. The last thing we expected was the news that JFK Jr’s plane was missing from it’s flight from New Jersey the night before.
Knowing that is not a long flight and he should have landed hours earlier, the news was not good and would probably end in tragedy.
It’s was the death of Camelot
In times like that you can only hope for the best, but you know that the chances for a good outcome were very slim. It was 3 days later that we learned the plane and their bodies on board were all deceased and with their deaths went their dreams and the death of the return to Camelot.
It’s hard to believe that it really has been 25 years since the death of JFK Jr. and his wife Carolyn and her sister Lauren, but for most of us, we still remember exactly where we were when we heard the news.

John F. Kennedy Jr., who was born days after his father was elected as the 35th president, died 25 years ago in a plane crash off Martha's Vineyard. NBC's Anne Thompson reports on a new biography about his life, and Matt Berman, a friend and colleague at George magazine, joins TODAY to look at Kennedy's legacy.
