Cereal for dinner?

Let’s face it. These are tough economic times for Americans. Inflation has taken a big bite out of our food budget. And we are looking for ways to save money. One idea from the folks at Kellogg’s was to start eating cereal for dinner. Is that such a bad idea?

People say they enjoy having breakfast for dinner. That usually means eggs and bacon with toast or a nice omelette. For some having breakfast for dinner means a heaping helping of pancakes or even French toast. Most of us don’t think of having a bowl of cereal for dinner. Until now .

When we think of breakfast cereal it takes us back to our youth because it was a quick meal that we didn’t need our parents to fix for us. You could just grab a box of your favorite port in a bowl add milk and you were done.

Maybe we don’t think of having breakfast cereal for dinner because it was something that was done by kids, college students and people on a tight budget.

Tough times at the grocery store

With these tough economic times maybe we should reconsider the idea. There are plenty of healthy cereals that you can choose from. You don’t have to eat the sugary kid stuff.
If you choose a healthy option you might actually be doing something good for you as well as saving money.  That’s what the boss at Kellogg’s was trying to say. At least that’s what we think.

Cereal variety

Kellogg’s says

From the Entrepreneur website... Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of WK Kellogg Co Gary Pilnick is taking heat online after suggesting that financially struggling Americans should eat cereal for dinner during a recent interview.

Pilnick appeared in an interview with CNBC last week where he touted the brand's latest advertising campaign with the tagline: "Give chicken the night off." In the interview, he suggested that Americans who are struggling financially should opt for cereal as dinner during the week.

The good news is, if you do have cereal for dinner, it will be a quick cleanup. That alone would make a lot parents rethink the idea.

Fun fact: there are 2.7 billion boxes — enough to wrap around the earth thirteen times — of cereal sold every year, according to the National Cereal Day website.

That's a whole lotta milk, people.

Here are some other fun facts:

Cap’n Crunch’s full name is Horatio Magellan Crunch. He was born on Crunch Island in the Sea of Milk.

(SIDE NOTE: Where the hell is Cap'n Crunch on this list? This is the NUMBER ONE cereal of all time. Sure, you couldn't hear your Saturday morning cartoons over the sound of crunch and the eventual scrape of the roof of your mouth, but who care. Oh Cap'n My Cap'n, nothing compares to you.)

Anyway.

Of the more than 314 million people in the U.S., 49 per cent start their day with a bowl of cereal.

Breakfast cereal was an American invention that began as a digestive aid because people in the 1800s were eating too much meat and I guess that stopped things up. Ew.

Yet, cereal is, without a doubt, the best meal of the day. Now, I know what you're thinking: "What about bacon and eggs? What about pancakes and waffles?"

Too labor intensive.

You don't need to be a gourmet chef to make a bowl of cereal. All you need is a bowl, some milk, and your favorite cereal. Pour, splash, and voila! You've got a meal that's ready in under a minute.

It was the first fast food, PEOPLE!

Also, consider the versatility of a bowl of gruel. You can have it for breakfast, lunch, dinner, or even as a midnight snack. It's the ultimate any-time-of-day food.

And let's not forget the most important part of cereal: the milk. Milk is the perfect complement to cereal.

It's the yin to cereal's yang, the peanut butter to its jelly, the Leonardo DiCaprio to any woman under 25.

But the best part about cereal? It's a meal that never gets old. Sure, you might get tired of eating the same thing for breakfast every day, but with cereal, there's always a new flavor to try. (I'm talking to you Cookie Crisp!)

9. Life: 58.1 million boxes sold

What? Life? I feel like this is just not a decent cereal at all. I don't give a crap if Mikey liked it. If your mom bought you this cereal, she was smoking Virginia Slims and drinking Tab in the other room, silently asking herself why she had children.

8. Frosted Mini-Wheats: 71.3 million

Again, a cereal found in your grandfather's pantry, which, when he ate, your grandmother screamed something about too much sugar and the diabetes. No thanks.

7. Lucky Charms: 86.4 million

OK, these are decent. Let's be honest. We're only in it for the marshmallows. Magically DELICIOUS indeed! In fact, they sell boxes of JUST Lucky Charms marshmallows because Americans do not care about living.

6. Froot Loops: 91.7 million

Toucan Sam had a REAL problem, if you ask me. In the 80s, people who "followed their nose" ended up in jail or passed out inside a stall at Studio 54. What was this bird teaching our children? And the SPELLING? Anyway, good, sugary cereal. A classic.

If you'd like to mainline a Cinnabon in crunch form, then have at it, because this sugary cereal is for you. Don't say I didn't warn you though.
