Cheers! It’s National Mojito Day
Yes it’s National Mojito Day and it couldn’t have landed on a more perfectly hot day to celebrate this refreshing drink. With our current July heatwave we are told to stay hydrated. Of course we know that means drink lots of fluids but, wouldn’t it be nice to work in an ice cold mojito?
I didn’t have my first one until the early 2000’s when I was in Miami for a radio convention and had the pleasure of having dinner with singer Jon Secada at a swanky Cuban restaurant. Jon insisted that we have a mojito and I honestly didn’t know what one was.
He looked at me with shock or maybe even disdain that I had lived this long without having one. After he insisted everyone at the table order one we heartily agreed.
Let’s just say that it did not disappoint. First off they look like no other drink with it’s mashed mint leaves at the bottom of the glass and floating up and down. It was so refreshing and tasty that if I recall we ordered a few more before the night was done. Thanks Jon!

Mojito Recipe Ingredients
Here’s what you’ll need to make this mint mojito recipe:
- Fresh mint – The star of this classic cocktail! You’ll muddle some mint leaves to infuse the drink with flavor and add more to your glass for garnish.
- White rum – Jack and I are fans of 10 Cane and Bacardi Silver Rum, but any white rum would work here. Feel free to use your favorite!
- Fresh lime juice – It adds bright, tart flavor. Always, always use freshly squeezed lime juice in this mojito recipe.
- Simple syrup – Classic mojito recipes call for sugar, but I like to use simple syrup in its place. It streamlines the recipe, as you don’t need to muddle the sugar with the lime and mint. Simple syrup keeps for several weeks in the fridge, so I like to keep it on hand for anytime I’m in the mood for a fun drink.
- Club soda or sparkling water – It balances the tart lime and alcohol and gives the cocktail a fun fizz.
- Ice – You can’t make a cool, refreshing mojito without it!
Doesn’t that sound like a nice drink to quash your thirst and help keep you refreshed during this un-godly heatwave of July ’24?
