Why Can’t Bill Belichick Find A Job?
In Bill we trust?
You would think the second winningest coach of all time would find work rather easily, so why can’t Bill Belichick find a job? The season ended brutally three weeks ago and he has had interest from just one team. Interviewing twice for the woeful Atlanta Falcons. At first it did appear that he was their first choice and shoe in for the job. After the second interview in just a few days it seemed like a lock.
This past week the Falcons announced that they were hiring 47 year old Raheem Morris who at one time was an interim coach for them. His tenure as a fill in coach was not a stellar experience going 4 and 7 and not getting the full time job after the season ended with the team going 4-12. However he must have left quite an impression with the team after leaving he was the defensive coordinator of the Los Angeles Rams from 2021 to 2023.
The Falcons have flown
It must have been tough to be turned down from the team that you beat in the craziest Super Bowl of all time. The 2017 game is still considered to be the most dramatic comeback ever in the big game. With the New England Patriots tailing 28-3 in the 3rd quarter it looked all but over. That was until the Pats mounted the most thrilling quarter and a half of football no New Englander or Falcon fan will ever forget. By the end of the game the Patriots made it all the way back winning 34-28.

A Blank check?
Poor Arthur Black the owner of not only the Falcons but also your favorite Big Orange Box Store, The Home Depot was ready to dance on the sideline along his wife, until Belichick and company rained on his parade. After the loss it was only downhill for his team. Boston College quarterback and QB of the Falcons Matt Ryan was never the same again. That was a soul crushing defeat for the Black and Red.
Why wouldn’t the Falcons want to hire the coach that humiliated his team? From what the rumor mill writers say, Bill wanted too much control of the next team he coached. Does that mean he wants to also be the head decision maker when it comes to all aspects of the team? If so, that might be the big reason he still is unemployed with only two head coaching jobs still open, Seattle and Washington.
What does Zo know?
I asked former Patriots QB Scott Zolak and now host of the Zolak and Bertrand show on 98.5 The Sports Hub why is it Bill is still out of work. His answer was because of three things. 1, Bill wants total control of all team decisions. 2, Bill is 72 and that would make him the oldest head coach by far and 3, Teams are looking for a coach who will be around for more than 2-3 years and for Belichick at his age it would be hard to envision him coaching beyond 75.
For Bill the time is running out. Zolak says the longer he is on the sidelines looking in the harder it will be for him to land a head coaching job. Scott Zolak is a big fan of Belichick and believes he can still be a great coach for any team, but it has to be this year or else it’s wait and see for a desperate team who fires their coach next season. That is probably the most likely scenario because it will give Belichick the upper hand with a team longing for a new head coach.
Nantucket bound?
Would it be so bad for Bill to take a summer off and enjoy his house and boat on Nantucket and wait for the phone to ring? It sounds pretty good to me.
