The top ten minor league ballparks - Including Polar Park In Worcester
USA Today is out with their list of the top minor league ballparks. The list was compiled by an expert panel who looked at several aspects of minor league ballpark life. They considered atmosphere, amenities, architecture, and homages to major league fields or legendary players. I'm happy to report that one of the top ten is right in our backyard. Polar Park In Worcester. Here's the complete list.
#10 - First Horizon Park in Nashville Tennessee. The park is home to the Nashville Sounds, and features a Fun Zone where kids can play the 9-hole mini golf course, see who throws the fastest pitch, and also play wiffle ball.
#9 - Dell Diamond in Round Rock, Texas. This park is home of the Round Rock Express. Activities include a pool, rock wall, and bungee trampoline.
#8 - Durham Bulls Athletic Park in Durham, North Carolina. Home of the Durham Bulls, an affiliate of the Tampa Bay Rays, you can check out the original snorting bull from the "Bull Durham" movie that hangs above the concourse. They also have a Blue Monster which is a Fenway-style left field wall that's 32 feet tall.
#7 - Truist Field in Charlotte, North Carolina. Before taking in a Charlotte Knights game, you can check out the Hall of Fame Rotunda. There's also a dedicated exhibit for Eddie G.G. Burton who played in the Negro Leagues.
#6 - Southwest University Park in El Paso, Texas. Home of the El Paso Chihuahuas, the park's architecture "pays homage to the city's history in such elements as the red brick exterior and a boxcar-like facade inspired by Union Depot."
#5 - Louisville Slugger Field in Louisville, Kentucky. The home of the Louisville Bats, there's a statue of Pee Wee Reese. There's also an outfield seating/picnic area with the Ohio river in the background.
#4 - FirstEnergy Stadium in Reading, Pennsylvania. Home to the Reading Fightin Phils. There's a museum in the main concourse, and there's also a pool, picnic area, and boardwalk-style concessions.
#3 - Polar Park In Worcester, Massachusetts. Home of the Worcester Red Sox aka WooSox. Lots to do for young fans who can play at Plymouth Street Playground which is just beyond the outfield. They also have Workers Reality, an augmented reality baseball-themed scavenger hunt for all ages. That said, I've heard nothing but great things about Polar Park In Worcester for a great time for the whole family.
#2 - Sahlen Field in Buffalo, New York. Home of the Buffalo Bisons, it's one of the bigger parks for a minor league one. It has 16,600 seats and was designed so a third deck could be added quickly if Buffalo got a major league expansion team.
#1 - Modern Woodmen Park in Davenport, Iowa. Home of the Quad Cities River Bandits, the venue features a mini amusement park. It includes rides like: a giant Ferris wheel, kids roller coaster, and the only double-decker carousel in the state. There's also a cornfield in the stadium.
