Is It Time To Say Goodbye To Bill Belichick?
The worst season since Bob and Bill came to town
Win or lose this Sunday against the Jets this will be our worst season in over 3o years since 1992 when they went 2-14. In 1990 they went 1-15! How soon we forget! We have grown very much used to winning…a lot. Is it time to say goodbye to Bill Belichick? We are a spoiled fanbase for sure and our expectation for winning is probably as high as any team for any sport in any town. That’s why we have a hard time tolerating a losing season, let alone two in a row. In 2022 the Pats had a losing record of 8-9 and that was considered to be the low water mark, until now.
Back in the day
You have to go back over 30 years now to a time that was worse than today. In the late 80’s and early 90’s the team was dreadful. You could get a ticket to any game you wanted. I recall going to see the Dan Marino led Miami Dolphins launch an all out air attack on our defense and seeing more than half the stands filled with aqua marine colored jerseys rooting on the Fins.
Of course anyone who was around in the early 90’s knows that there was a chance we could lose the team to St. Louis because owner James Orthwein (an heir to the Budweiser Beer company) was looking to move the team but was thwarted by stadium owner one Robert Kraft. Mr. Kraft had an ironclad 100 year lease stipulating that the team was unable to break, Orthwein being a smart man knew this was not the fight for him ended up selling the team to the Krafts. The rest is NFL history and now your New England Patriots are considered royalty and the standard- bearers of what a proper football franchise should be.
From Bill to Pete to Bill
When Bill Parcells rode into town 1n 1993 with a brand new attitude everything changed and we quickly became a winning team, making it all the way to the Super Bowl (losing to the Green Bay Packers). That was enough for Parcells saying if he is expected to cook in the kitchen he should be able to buy the groceries, another way of saying he wanted to be the General Manager as well as the old ball coach.
Enter Pete Carrol after the departure of the Big Tuna (Parcells), let’s just say that was too hard an act to follow and it wasn’t long before Pete was pink slipped out of town and off to a brilliant career at USC.

The Bill has arrived!
In January of 2000 we were introduced to Bill Belichick as the new head coach of the Patriots, he of course was on Parcell’s staff as a defensive coordinator and travelled back to New York to be with again in the same role with the Jets. When Parcells stepped down as the Jets Head Coach, he wanted to put Belichick in charge of the team and head upstairs, but our Bill Belichick had other ideas and spurned the Jets.

Tom Terrific
The ball really started rolling with the drafting of young Tom Brady (the 199th pick in the 6xth round). We know all that followed, it was the golden age of New England Football. Winning 6 Super Bowls and countless playoff games and becoming a legit Dynasty. That’s why we are so spoiled.
Is it time to say goodbye to Bill?
It may not be a popular opinion but I think Bill deserves another year as our HC, however he doesn’t deserve another year as our General Manager. That is the job he should relinquish and focus solely on the playing field not the salary cap and drafting game. He has not done well in that department these past few years, drafting the ill fitting Mac Jones as the heir apparent to Tom Brady and many other draft disappointments.
His team has not given up on Bill the Coach and neither should we. They still come out to play tough every game but overmatched with better talent on the opposing team, again because of Bill’s bad drafting and General Managing.
I would like to see him get a veteran QB and give it another year with the best possible chance to win. If that doesn’t succeed than it will be time to say goodbye to the best coach the Patriots ever had. If you don’t believe that he is, you can ask Tommy and Gronky and many other former players with many rings for their big hands.
