Where’s Leo? Newton Police Launch Scavenger Hunt With Their Community Dog
You’ve heard of Where’s Waldo right? But have you heard of Where’s Leo? The Newton Police Department wants you to find Leo, and will be giving you clues on their Facebook page. Leo is the department’s community dog, and finding him will help you earn prizes during the month of March.
Who’s Leo?
Leo has been the Newton Police Department’s community resource dog since 2021. He got his name after getting suggestions from the community. They received over 700 name suggestions and chose Leo that they said seemed to fit the English Cream Golden Retriever the best. He is the partner of Officer Justin Lau, who spent 18 months in training with Leo. As a puppy, Leo came from Golden Opportunities for Independence (GOFIDOG). It’s a nonprofit organization that breeds, raises, and trains service dogs and community resource dogs.
Leo was trained to provide comfort in tough situations. Also, to assist in finding people who are lost and missing, and to be out in the community. Officer Leo was also trained to lie down with people who may need comfort in times of stress or tragedy, as well as to assist in diffusing high anxiety during stressful situations. He also helps within Newton Police Department, to assist and support officer health and wellness.
The Newton Police Department scavenger hunt
During the month of March, you can win some Leo-themed prizes. Every Monday in March at 3pm, Leo and his handler, Officer Justin Lau will hide a special Leo police patch somewhere in Newton. You can find the location on social media and whoever find the patch and shares it online will get a prize. The clues will be revealed on the Newton Police Department’s Facebook page. The game is meant to be not only fun, but to strengthen the connection between the police force and the community it serves.
