Are “Dad Jokes” The Key To Good Parenting?
For those of us that appreciate good dad jokes rejoice, because you are raising your kids in the best possible way. Let’s face it, parenting is NOT easy, and some would suggest that it is harder than ever with the advent of the dreaded smart phones and social media. They have an ironclad grip on our kids to the point that they would as soon lose a limb (figuratively speaking of course) than give them up.
How do we break through all this clutter and distraction? Well, you have to make yourself enjoyable to be around for one thing. Having one on one time with our kids is getting harder and harder to get so you have to make each moment count. Dad jokes can help by making moments lighter and letting your kids know that everything is okay.
This doesn’t mean that every interaction with your children has to be a literal joke, it just means that when things get stressful you’re there to assure them that you can still find humor in the moment.
The good humor dad
There’s a new study out that suggests a key to good parenting is: Humor. That’s right . . . “Dad jokes,” being playful and silly, and laughing at crazy, stressful situations.
72% of parents believe humor can be an effective parenting tool . . . and most parents say they use (or plan to use) humor in parenting their own children, mostly because there’s more potential benefit than harm.
Not everyone is naturally funny . . . but this isn’t performing a Netflix stand-up special. 70% of parents say they would be interested in a course on how to utilize humor in parenting.
Grown adults who say THEIR parents used humor are also FAR more likely to say they now have a good relationship with their folks . . . AND that they feel like their parents did a good job raising them.
The research shows parental humor could be a secret ingredient in “fostering cognitive flexibility . . . relieving stress . . . and promoting creative problem-solving and resilience in both parents and children.”
We will leave you with a dad joke so you can start out,
My wife asked me the other day where I got so much candy. I said, “I always have a few Twix up my sleeve.” Now that’s a joke any kid will enjoy, but it wouldn’t hurt if you happen to have a Twix to hand out either.
