If you're still deciding whether or not it is worth it to purchase TSA PreCheck then you will be glad to know that there has been a study to find out how much time you save. The results are not overwhelming or particularly encouraging, but once you have it, you probably don't want to lose it.
My wife and I have had it for over 6 years now and find it to be a great investment. We fly up to 6 times on an average year, which is not a lot compared to people that do a lot of business travel, but still who wants to wait in a long line at the airport?
There are times when we head to the airport on a busy travel day knowing that the lines are going to be long. For instance, this past Christmas we traveled to California from Boston on December 23rd, which has to be one of the busiest travel days of the year. Sure, there were long lines, and even the TSA PreCheck lines were relatively long, but nothing like the lines for people without it.
We wondered why people don't take the time and sign up for it all the time. Is it the initial investment that stops people or is the hassle of going through the motions of applying for one? Either way, we're kind of glad that less people haven't.
Is TSA PreCheck worth it?
Well a study found it only saves an average of seven minutes, which doesn't sound like a lot, but if you're anxious about missing your flight, those 7 minutes can make a big difference to your chances of catching it.
The average person with PreCheck said it takes 36 minutes to get through airport security. That's compared to 43 minutes for everyone else.
PreCheck people also get to the airport just as early: 1 hour and 41 minutes for domestic flights, compared to 1 hour and 47 minutes for non-PreCheckers.
They claim PreCheck makes the whole experience a lot less stressful, though. On a scale from 1 to 10, people with PreCheck rated the stress of getting through security as a 3.4. That's compared to a 7.3 before they signed up.
All I can say about it is, I my wife and I have had TSA PreCheck for almost 7 years now and will continue to use it, that is until too many people have signed up for it. Then it will be time to switch to CLEAR, which is supposed to be the next big thing.
See you at the terminal!
