Three Types of 4th of July Injuries Are on the Rise

4th of July injuries are increasing, not exactly the news we want heading into the holiday weekend but it’s a reminder to be careful & safe.

According to new research from ValuePenguin, Independence Day related injuries are on the rise.

Fireworks Injuries

From 2012 to 2021, firework injuries increased by 32%. Teenagers aged 15 to 19 had the highest percentage of fireworks injuries (12.4%) in 2021. Despite this, 82% of parents with children under 18 say they think it’s okay for kids to play with fireworks. (A reminder that fireworks are 100% illegal in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.)

Grilling Injuries

Emergency room visits for grill injuries increased by 18% between 2012 and 2021. A total of 21% of emergency room visits for grill injuries occurred among children younger than 10 years old – the highest percentage among all age groups.

Heat Related Injuries

The number of heat-related deaths increased by 56% between 2018 and 2021. Older Americans and babies are most at risk for heat injury and death.

Swimming Related Injuries

Americans are at greater risk of drowning because of a lack of pool safety awareness. One in three Americans would not be comfortable saving someone struggling in the water, and 17% do not know how to swim.

Tips to Avoid July 4th Injuries

Below are a number of ways to keep you, your family, and your guests safe this 4th of July Weekend.

  • Prevent Heat Injury

    To prevent serious heat injury, stay hydrated and don’t binge drink. Seek medical assistance as soon as possible if you experience symptoms of heat injury.

  • Grill Safety

    Hot grills should be handled with care. Children and pets should not be allowed near the grill.

  • Pool Safety

    Pools should not be left unattended. To prevent slips and falls, make sure the pool area is dry and clean.

  • Fireworks Safety

    Fireworks should be left to the professionals. At-home fireworks like sparklers can burn you severely even if they are deemed “safe.” Remember, fireworks are illegal in Massachusetts, while certain types are permitted in New Hampshire and Rhode Island

  • Consume Alcohol Responsibly

    Make sure to serve alcohol responsibly and arrange for rides for guests who have overindulged. You may be held responsible if a guest drives home drunk and gets into an accident.
