Recap of Malcolm Young’s Funeral
Any differences and grievances were put aside Tuesday (November 28) as AC/DC alumni Brian Johnson, Phil Rudd, Cliff Williams and Mark Evans joined family and friends of the late Malcolm Young during a funeral service at St. Mary’s Cathedral in Sydney, Australia.
Young died on November 18 at the age of 64 after a battle with dementia, and he was remembered by friends who spoke during the ceremony as “generous” and with “immense talent,” as well as with a penchant for losing anchors at sea while boating and for a wardrobe that ended when he bought six black T-shirts and two pairs of jeans.
Brother and fellow AC/DC guitarist Angus Young carried Malcolm’s 1963 Gretsch guitar, nicknamed The Beast, in a case to and from the church and it was reportedly placed in his coffin before a private family burial later on.
The hundreds who attended the service received a memorial booklet with a black guitar pick and a note saying that, “Malcolm’s family thank you for your love, support and overwhelming outpouring of kindness during this time. They ask that you remember Malcolm as a man who was generous and had immense talent. His enormous legacy to his family and music industry worldwide would never be forgotten.”
The hearse carrying Young’s coffin to the cemetery was led by the Scots College Pipes and Drums Band, which played a medley of AC/DC songs.
Angus Young has not revealed any plans for AC/DC, which now includes nephew Steve Young in Malcolm’s place.
