It’s nice to have the convenience of a big city. Usually your commute is shorter (possibly walkable if you work in the city) and you probably have all the restaurants and coffee shops you can muster – but – traffic, traffic, overpopulation, traffic!
That’s why many prefer the small city life. Still an abundance of convenience with less traffic, traffic, traffic and fewer human beings all up in your business everywhere you go. You get a taste of that small town culture while still tasting that bigger city life a bit as well.
WalletHub is out with their yearly countdown of the best small cities in America and the Top 10 is dominated by two states: Indiana and MASSACHUSETTS! (Yay!)
The Best Small City in America is Carmel, Indiana. It topped WalletHub’s comparison of 1,300 small cities in the US. To give things a little perspective moving forward, Carmel was tops with an overall score of 71.16. A Massachusetts small city came in 2nd place in the country (no spoilers, see below LOL). Brentwood, Tennessee came in third.
Both Massachusetts and Indiana have three small cities in the national top 10. If you’re curious about who finished at the BOTTOM (because I was too), Bessemer, Alabama was named the worst small city in America of 2023 with an overall score of 37.02. Monroe, Louisiana and Alexandria, Louisiana round out the bottom 3.
New England actually has 8 entries in the 25 Small Cities in America so we’ll give you all 8 – 7 of which are in Massachusetts (but to be fair Mass has way more small cities than any other New England state).
Since we have such great areas to live in, it’s not a huge surprise that Mass also has the most expensive town in all of America.
