8 Winning Boston Sports Bars To Watch The Games

The Celtics are heating up as the season winds down. Meanwhile, the Bruins are still near the top of the pack. Playoffs are around the corner. So, where will you be watching? Check out 8 winning Boston sports bars to watch the games.

Whatever the sport and whenever the season, it’s always fun to get together with friends to catch a game in a bar. There’s something about being surrounded by other fans. Hey, it’s the closest thing to being at a game, and it’s a heck of a lot cheaper. Have you seen the prices for Celtics and Bruins games lately? Ouch.

Thanks to the website Eater Boston, I was able to add to my list of favorites. Some of my favorite sports-watching moments have happened in Boston bars. If you were old enough to remember the storied 2004 Red Sox run to capture the World Series. There was a ticket to be had for under $1000 at the Fenway games vs. the Yankees in the playoffs. And that was a lot of money back then. Friends came into town to stay with us so we could watch the game together. We headed into the city and watched at a couple of bars. Everyone was screaming, crying and clapping. It was electric.

The Next Best Thing

Watching playoff games at restaurants and pubs near the home venue is exhilarating. Catch a Pats game at Patriot Place pubs, or Sox game at bars on Landsdowne or Jersey Street. Cheer along with fellow Bruins and Celtics fans in places near the Garden… It’s as close as you can get to being there. Seeing the jerseys and t-shirts, hearing the cheers. It’s a little slice of sports heaven.

  • 1. Cask 'N Flagon

    62 Brookline Ave. Boston

    Better known as “the Cask” this Fenway sports bar staple is the perfect gathering spot to cheer on the Sox (hopefully there will be something to cheer about) before, after or during the games. It doesn’t even have to be a Sox game. Now is a good time to go watch the Bs and Cs as it’s less crowded. It’s been a popular sports spot since it opened in 1969.

     

  • 2. Stats Bar & Grill

    77 Dorchester St. BostonĀ 

    Stats is a multi-level sports bar in Southie. With 24 televisons in the house, you won’t miss any of the big games. They do lunch, dinner and brunch on the weekends. A little something for everyone on the casual fare menu from steak tips to salads, soups, pizzas, burger and tacos. There’s a full bar too, with an awesome selection of beer, wine and spirits.Ā 

  • 3. The Harp

    85 Causeway St. Boston

    200 Patriot Place in Foxborough (new location)

    The Harp now has 2 locations; the original near the TD Garden in Boston, and a new location near Gillette Stadium at Patriot Place. Both are great venues for gametime. With scores of TVs, plenty of bar space and high tops for view, it’s a win-win at either locations. The Harp Boston has become a neighborhood institution for pre-games, post-games and during games, and last year they opened in Patriot Place to be the go-to sports bar near Gillette Stadium.

  • 4. Sullivan's Tap

    168 Canal St. BostonĀ 

    Here’s another TD Garden legendary neighborhood gem. In fact, it’s Boston’s original sports bar! As stated on their website, “Sullivan’s Tap is Boston’s Oldest Sports Bar! First opened in 1933, we pride ourselves on being the hub for all of the biggest sports fans in Boston. Conveniently located just a few steps away from TD Garden, we are the perfect stop to catch the game either on-screen on in real life. With a multitude of bar games and tons of giant TVs, there’s no better hub for sports than Sully’s.” There you have it. A great spot near the Garden to cheer on our Boston sports teams.

  • 5. Dillon's

    955 Boylston St, Boston

    Over in the Back Bay, there’s the always popularĀ Dillion’s. It’s an historical spot named after Captain S. Dillon, who was stationed at the former firehouse from 1920-1950. This landmark venue has 2 floors with plenty of seating to watch a game. The local favorite is also tā€™s also the “official bar of local Arsenal supporters club the Boston Gooner,” as mentioned in Eater Boston. They invite you to “head to the downstairs bar, join the crowd, and grab a Carlsberg for $3 during Arsenal matches.”

  • 6. The Fours

    15 Cottage Ave. Quincy

    Named for #4 Bobby Orr, the Fours is classic Boston sports bar. It’s been at this spot in Quincy since 1994. (The Boston location, near the TD Garden, closed in 2020 after 40 years there). There’s also a Norwell location. This place is packed with sports memorabilia, traditional New England food and enough TVs so everyone has a view of the game. I’ve been going here for years and am never disappointed. Also, parking around here is pretty easy and inexpensive (if not free).

    I mean, look…does it get more Boston sports-bary than this?

     

  • 7. The Banshee

    934 Dorchester Ave. BostonĀ 

    Banshee’sĀ  is the place to catch the soccer matches, in addition to Boston sports. Touted on their website as ” the number one pub & restaurant to watch domestic and European sports in the greater Boston area. If your game is being broadcast in North America, then you can rest assured that The Banshee will be showing it on one of its 14 flat screen televisions that span two floors of entertainment.” This Savin Hill, Dorchester gem has all the small, towny vibes, but it’s warm and welcoming to all. You feel like you’ve stepped into a genuine Irish pub.

     

  • 8. Lincoln Tavern

    425 W. Broadway in South BostonĀ 

    Located in the heart of Southie, the LincolnĀ is a classic American tavern. It’s a large space, steeped in dark wood and comfort vibes. “Lincoln draws inspiration from its surrounding, hard-working, and uniquely American neighborhood.” I recommend the French Onion soup, by the way. Or try the pizza, it’s award-winning! The Lincoln opened in 2012 in what was a former department store. So think high ceilings, tiled floor, brick walls and loads of seating in a “hall” like atmosphere. It’s the perfect place to catch a game with your people and root on the hometown teams.
