There is no definite answer where the term "420" originated, but our limited research led us to the The Waldos, a group of high school kids who in 1971 were given a treasure map to a weed patch and started their search at 4:20pm.
In the fall of '71 Waldo Steve was given a treasure map to a patch of weed on the Point Reyes Peninsula. The map was given to him by a friend whose brother was in the U.S. Coast Guard and was growing cannabis. The coastguardsman was paranoid he would get busted so he granted permission to harvest.

In 2016 The Waldos found the guy who gave them the treasure map in 1971 to a patch of weed that spurred them to meet at 4:20 p.m. next to the statue of Louis Pasteur at San Rafael high school.
