Ok, now that I have your attention, we maybe all asking: can we expect a Tom Brady retirement? No, in my opinion.
After the Sunday night Buccaneers loss, sports media and frankly, ALL media turned on the speculation machine and start throwing out the question of the hour.
One outlet, Deseret.com even portrayed Tom’s thanking to the press as, a farewell:
So, before he walked off the stage. He thanked them for their work this season — and throughout his time with the Buccaneers.
Tom Brady, Elton John Retirement Promise
Did you know that Tom isn’t the first talent to stay beyond his welcome. Seventy-five year old music legend Elton John has promised FIVE different retirements since the 1980’s. Mick Jagger, Paul McCartney, Rod Stewart, and Billy Joel are WAY past the normal retirement age. Yet, none of them have given any signals of hanging it up.
Studies has shown that high achievement personalities have difficulty in cutting the ties to their fans, because of the self-afflicted narrative playing in their head:
you’re only as good as your last performance.
David Letterman shared in Vulture a hysterical, yet sad commentary of how retirement isn’t what it’s cracked up to be:
So, I’m seated at dinner next to a man who is the assistant chief of staff to the prime minister of Norway. I’m feeling like a big shot. And when it comes about dessert time, the guy says to me, “Excuse me. Why are you here?” You know what? I think I picked up somebody else’s mail. “So you’re here by mistake?” And I said, Yeah. And he said, “Oh.” So there you go — you get invited to the state dinner, nobody knows why. That’s the sum total of being retired.
Let’s look at other stars who can’t hang it up!
