We can't believe it! It's time to seek out the most POPULAR Halloween costumes of 2023!

Yes, the season of pumpkin spice, pumpkin this and pumpkin that is here. Everyone is getting ready for the neighborhood "Boo Bash" or the nightclub Halloween costume contest.

Everyone knows SOMEONE who is WAY into Halloween! By Sunday October 1, the neighbors' outdoor Halloween decorations were UP. That weekend, the stores were already jam packed with supersized candy aisles, and over-the-top-kids costumes.

The Stats

Reports show that 2023 Halloween spending may exceed pre-pandemic levels. It seems that people, despite higher credit card usage, have no problem spending on fun stuff like candy, decorations, costumes and entertaining.

Consumers are expected to spend a record $12.2 billion for Halloween candy, costumes and decorations, according to National Retail Federation's annual survey conducted by Prosper Insights & Analytics.

On an individual basis, we'll spend about $108.24 per person, a jump from $100.45 in 2002.

Why Is It More Expensive?

While we can site inflation for the higher cost this year, reports show that there is a SUGAR shortage.  The Wall Street Journal reported earlier this year that sugar prices rose to its highest since 2012, stemming from bad weather that hit China, India and Thailand.

Why Do We Like Halloween So Much?

While we all have our own individual reasons, there are professionals that can tell us why as well.

A professor at the Psychology Department at Old Dominion University says:

"It’s the excitement of facing your fears in a controlled environment, like a haunted house. They raise adrenaline, they raise your endorphins," Halloween also offers the chance to dress up as someone else and relieve some baggage you might be carrying around in your day-to-day life."

Add to that, in creating many Boo Bash radio station events over the years, our audience loves the safe, fun environment that allows them to dress up, be someone else, dance, have fun and be a kid again.

Let's not forget the candy. I wonder if WE are the cause of the sugar shortage.
