Scattered across the USA, kids, worn like a badge of honor, participate in the Kids Mullet Championships. Consequently, these young rock stars, have no fear of getting their picture taken, knowing that the internet, is forever. Long before their childhood trophy, collects dust in an attic of missed dreams, the young Kid Rock, Bon Jovi, and Blake Shelton are focused on TODAY. To these kids, Joe Dirt is the hero to aspire to. Say hello, to their GOD: the mullet.

The Mullet

The first mullet was spotted in first century AD, according to Wikipedia:

A metal figurine, dated back to the 1st-century AD and found during 2018 preparations for a new car park at the Wimpole Estate, England, was hypothesised by archaeologists to indicate that natives in ancient Britain during the Roman occupation could have worn their hair similarly to mullets.[16]

In the sixth century, Byzantine scholar Procopius wrote that some factions of young males wore their hair long at the back and cut it short over the forehead. This non-Roman style was termed the 'Hunnic' look.[17][18]

Researcher Alan Henderson describes the ancient hairstyle as useful.  It kept the hair out of the eyes, yet provided warmth and protection for the neck.[19]

More from Mullet Champ

This business-in-the-front, party-in-the-back style has been around way before it was popularized by actors and rock stars in the 1980’s. According to some historians, the mullet has been around since at least Ancient Greece, where the style was as much for function as it was for fashion. Cropped hair around the face with longer locks in the back allowed for both visibility and a protective layer of hair for your neck. Homer even described a haircut that sounds eerily familiar in The Iliad: “their forelocks cropped, hair grown long at the backs.” The Greeks weren’t the only ones sporting the mullet, though. There is evidence that Neanderthals and our oldest ancestors would wear this ‘do, as well.

The Mullet In Pop Culture

Undeniably, some of the more famous mullets, belong to the hysterical David Spade character in the movie Joe Dirt. Furthermore, the most likely famous, music mullet belongs to Billy Ray Cirus.

Lastly, if you dare, enjoy of the some of the winners, in the Kids Mullet Championships.
