Elton John, sober 32 years this week, is maybe, one the most accomplished people on Earth.  At 75, his endless energy and drive has him travelling the world on a goodbye tour. Add to that he has current hits topping the new music charts. Every month Elton is given an award. His AIDS awareness foundation is thriving.  I would guess that his most proud accomplishment is his sobriety. This week, Elton celebrates THIRTY TWO YEARS SOBER.

How Sobriety Changed Elton

Elton commenting on his proud achievement from Variety:

The smartest move I made immediately after treatment was to take an entire year off from all work. I was determined to make my recovery the only focus in my life. I completely cleared my diary for a year.

Today, my best advice to people who are facing those difficult early days of sobriety is to get humble. Make recovery your absolute priority over everything else. Don’t go back to work too soon. Take the time you need to learn and heal. I don’t think I would still be sober today if I hadn’t taken that whole year off and thrown myself into my program of recovery.

At my peak during that year, I was going to as many as five meetings a day! I made and served tea at the meetings. I was determined to lock in all the things that I had learned in treatment.

Alcoholism

Alcohol abuse touches everyone. Everyone, knows someone that is affected. If you know someone who needs help, don’t give up. Help is here.

She has never spoken publicly about any addiction issues and has not had the regular run-ins with the law seen in other celebrities. Since then, she has consistently praised those who decide to get sober and states that it is the best decision she ever made.

Kirstin Davis first began to seek treatment for addiction at the age of just 22, fearing that at the pace she was going, she wouldn’t make it to 30. She craved being numb to her feelings, and alcohol provided the perfect solution. The only thing that saved her was acting, which was the only thing more important to her besides her addiction. It gave her the motivation she needed to quit, and she hasn’t looked back since.

It wasn’t until Eminem experienced a near-fatal overdose that he found the strength to get sober. He did not take his spiraling addiction seriously and cut ties with anyone who expressed concern over his prescription pill use. It was only after doctors told him that he had ingested the equivalent of four bags of heroin that he sought help, even reaching out to Elton John for advice.
