Sure you can stay in again this year and watch the ball drop in Times Square on TV. But if you’re up for a night out, here are 4 good gameplans to have some fun New Year’s Eve in Boston and the ‘burbs.

  • West of Boston: Hit the slopes!

Over at Wachusett Mountain, you can ski until midnight and then head into the Coppertop lounge for some live blues at midnight.

  • All Over New England: Eat in the New Year!

It won’t be as bone-chilling cold as previous years on New Year’s Eve in Boston. But if you’d rather celebrate the new year at room temperature, lots of restaurants are still taking reservations. At Sonsie there’s a midnight masquerade party in their wine room.

  • South of Boston: Take in the Lights One More Time!

Take one last stroll through the Comm Ave Mall and enjoy the Christmas lights before they disappear. If you’re south of the city, the Magic of Lights at Gillette Stadium runs through New Year’s Eve.

  • Boston: First Night

If you’re willing to brave the crowds, there’s always First Night Boston. Of course there are the fireworks at midnight, but if you want to be home by midnight, you can still check out the parade throug the Back Bay, ice sculptures in Copley Square or do some ice skating on the frog pond.
