Lucy and her buddy, Maggie!
Sure, the Oscars are the subject of the day, but this weekend, Lucy walked a red carpet of her own. Thanks to an incredible group of students at Medfield High School, Lucy and other girls with disabilities were celebrated for their talents in the Miss Amazing Pageant.
A national organization that started in 2007 in Omaha, Nebraska by a then-13 year old Jordan Somer, Miss Amazing has gone nationwide. Medfield senior Andrea Nevins brought the program to Massachusetts three years ago and participation has doubled each year. There is no registration fee (though participants are encouraged to donate canned goods for the local food pantry.)
The girls are required to participate in three skill areas: Interview, Introduction, Evening Wear and Talent. One representative in each age division is selected to represent her state for the year. All participants will be crowned as princesses and medals are also awarded to the talent winners and runner-ups.
Each girl was paired up with a buddy (Lucy’s buddy was Maggie). Maggie helped Lucy navigate the day – from lunch to craft making to rehearsal to hair and makeup.
Before the show, each girl was teamed up with a Right Hand Man – Medfield High students who volunteered to be their dinner date and escort them on the stage. Lucy’s Right Hand Man was Thomas. I think she was smitten.
Lucy performed with her three friends – Lena, Anna B. and Anna V. – to Taylor Swift’s “Shake It Off”. The talents was impressive – from ballerinas to singers to gymnasts. It was an Amazing Day!
