As the United States prepares to mark its semiquincentennial (250th anniversary) this year, the city of Boston and its stories add to the diverse tapestry of our nation's history. The Old North Church Historic Site is one of these historic places that transcend the Revolutionary War itself, stretching back almost 303 years.

However, Old North Church is synonymous with the start of the American Revolution, with the story of Paul Revere and how signal lanterns were used to warn colonists of British troop movements.

Emily Spence, director of education at Old North Illuminated, said her organization is striving this year to broaden the storytelling associated with this historic site, according to GBH. "We describe it as a congregation that was united in their faith, but divided in their politics. We believe that about one-third of the congregation was Loyalist, one-third of the congregation was Patriot, and one-third of the congregation fell somewhere in the middle. They were kind of representative of the political division that existed in Boston as a whole," she said.

Notable figures linked to the church, including Capt. John Pulling Jr., Robert Newman, and Rev. Mather Byles reflect a range of Patriot and Loyalist positions.

Looking to more contemporary times, Spence noted that Old North Church has hosted several high-profile visitors, such as Gerald Ford and Queen Elizabeth.

This year, commemorations for the Fourth of July anniversary are expected to take on heightened importance. During Fourth of July events at Old North, the historic eight change-ringing bells — installed in America in the mid-18th century — will be featured, with participation from the MIT Guild of Bell Ringers.

"We usually have a full day of programming performances in the courtyard and performances inside the church, so it's definitely a day filled with music, activities, and tours. It's a great day to visit Old North," Spence said.

This year, as Old North Church commemorates its 303rd birthday amid the nation's 250th, those who preserve and care for this historic site hope to use the occasion to teach future generations lessons from history.
