The winter of 2026 has been particularly kind to New Hampshire's outdoor economy. On Thursday, March 5, the federal Bureau of Economic Analysis released new Outdoor Recreation Satellite Account data showing that the industry accounted for 33,000 jobs statewide and contributed $4.2 billion to gross domestic product in 2024.

According to an InDepthNH.org report, the U.S. Department of Commerce's Bureau of Economic Analysis revealed the outdoor recreation industry generated approximately $1.8 billion in wages and compensation in 2024.

The outdoor economy accounts for approximately 3.5% of New Hampshire's GDP, ranked sixth in the nation in snow activities, and encompasses diverse activities — from snow recreation to boating and hiking.

The Granite Outdoor Alliance, the New Hampshire Office of Outdoor Recreation Industry Development, and U.S. Sen. Jeanne Shaheen celebrated the data, highlighting its value for growth planning and for aligning outdoor-economy policy in the Granite State.

The report noted that, by late January, skier visits were up approximately 18% year over year across 16 ski areas, with increases in lessons, rentals, and F&B. Exact revenue figures, however, aren't tracked.

Ski industry leaders report increased skier visits this winter due to sustained cold and snow, with strong performance during major periods such as Christmas, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, and the February school vacations. In particular, Cranmore Mountain Resort noted a 9% year-to-date business rise and a 35% rise in its lighted tubing park.

“Reliable data like this allows New Hampshire to plan for growth,” said Janel Lawton, director of the New Hampshire Office of Outdoor Recreation Industry Development, in a statement. “Outdoor recreation grew 5.3% in 2024, nearly double the national rate. This sector continues to strengthen rural communities, support workforce development, and maintain New Hampshire's competitive edge.”
