The New Hampshire Department of Safety's Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has issued a warning regarding a widespread text message scam. This latest fraud attempt involves people impersonating the New Hampshire DMV to pressure victims into making immediate payments for alleged unpaid traffic fines.
According to a Boston 25 News report, the fraudulent texts threaten consequences such as suspension of vehicle registrations, driver's license restrictions, administrative fees, negative impacts on driving records, civil action, and credit implications if payment is not made promptly.
Authorities said a payment link in the message uses a URL containing “dmv-nh” to mimic an official state site. Still, officials explained that the New Hampshire DMV never sends text messages regarding payments. Legitimate texts are only used for appointment reminders.
DMV Director John Marasco advised recipients of the messages to delete them and refrain from sharing personal information with the senders of these messages. If they are unsure about the legitimacy of a message, individuals should contact the DMV directly at 603-227-4000 during business hours.
