As New England enters the thick of winter this month, it's tempting to hibernate indoors until spring breezes and warm temperatures return. The Cape Cod Times offers five outdoor winter activities for residents and visitors to enjoy the season, ranging from nature walks and festivals to skiing, winery visits, and bird watching.
Bird Watch on the Cape
Cape Cod's location along the Atlantic Flyway brings winter birding opportunities with spots like Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary (open Tuesday through Sunday, 9 a.m.–4 p.m.) and Monomoy National Wildlife Refuge (open daily from a half hour before sunrise to a half hour after sunset).
Find Your Winter Fun at a Festival
The Yarmouth Winter Carnival spans three days around Presidents Day weekend at Skull Island Adventure Golf and Sports World. Activities will feature face painting, a petting zoo, arcade games, food trucks, live entertainment, a craft tent, ice skating, and s'mores.
Go on a Nature Hike
Trails such as the Cape Cod Rail Trail and Cape Cod National Seashore offer opportunities to take in the wintery scenery. February guided nature tours offered by the Mashpee Conservation Department will be held on Sundays at 9 a.m. (Feb. 1, 8, 15, and 22).
Sharpen Your Skis
Cape Cod's parks and reserves provide skiing trails at places like Beebe Woods in Falmouth, Nickerson State Park in Brewster, and service roads along Cape Cod National Seashore. Some golf courses permit winter ski access subject to their policies.
Visit a Vineyard
Truro Vineyards offers year‑round outdoor wine experiences under a covered pavilion, with winter hours from noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday through Saturday. No reservations are needed.
