Percy Duphily, a junior at Bristol-Plymouth Regional Technical School, entered the contest as a class project. Students of the design and visual communications program were assigned to create a movie-inspired art project for the nationwide "Wicked: For Good" student poster competition. The contest complements the release of the recent installment of the popular Wicked enterprise, which has climbed to the top of the box office.
"For me, it felt like just another assignment. I didn't think I was going to win. I wasn't even going to turn it in," Duphily said in a statement shared with WJAR NBC 10 News. "My teacher took a vote, and most of us wanted to do it, so we all decided we were going to do it."
At the time she created the artwork, Duphily hadn't seen the first Wicked movie, but after she ran through some ideas with her classmates, she designed a few sketches. After finally seeing the film, she submitted her artwork. Her design centers on themes of sisterhood and friendship.
Duphily's mixed-media piece features her hand-drawn art, layered and composed in Photoshop. According to NBC 10 NEWS, the winning submission won free tickets to screen the movie with classmates, promotional opportunities, and publicity.
Duphily's artwork was ultimately selected as the winner. Along with movie tickets for her classmates, the students received "Wicked" merchandise.
Duphily's victory elevates the Taunton technical school's profile and supports her goals of pursuing character art in comics or band promotion.
