The Massachusetts MBTA and MassDOT are collaborating on a 12-month Water Transportation Study to evaluate expanding ferry service along the coast and connecting communities with Boston and other coastal towns.
Currently, the ferry has six routes that run from Charlestown, Hingham, Hull, Winthrop, East Boston, Lynn, and Quincy to Long Wharf, near the Aquarium Blue Line stop and the North End. Potential new destinations under consideration include Gloucester, Salem, Chelsea, and Everett.
“They [ferries] are a vital connection that strengthens ties between communities, reduces congestion, and supports sustainable travel,” said outgoing Transportation Secretary Monica Tibbits-Nutt in a news release shared with StreetsBlogMass.
According to StreetsBlogMass, the study seeks to improve current routes, explore new routes and terminals, enhance the ferry experience, and strengthen multimodal access to terminals while prioritizing ADA accessibility and transportation equity.
During its Oct. 8 meeting, the project team members shared a presentation detailing the study and answered community questions submitted virtually.
Public involvement is central. A multilingual survey was available to the public, and multiple outreach events, such as workshops and pop-ups, were organized to gather input. Officials emphasize equity and community voices, encouraging broad participation from residents, local leaders, and stakeholders to shape the study's direction.
