A European-style Christmas market is set to debut at the Madeira Feast grounds at 50 Madeira Ave. in New Bedford on Sunday, Dec. 7, from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. The market, organized by Club Madeirense S.S. Sacramento, will celebrate the holiday season with food, music, and local vendors.
“We got the idea from all the Christmas markets that you see happening in Portugal and all over Europe,” said Tony Abreu, chairman of the special events committee for the Clube Madeirense S.S. Sacramento, in a statement shared with The Herald News. The committee sponsors the Feast of the Blessed Sacrament, commonly known as the Madeira Feast. “What we're trying to do is get as much use and people down here throughout the year, not just for the feast.”
The event will feature festive activities such as train rides, bouncy houses, holiday treats, local arts and crafts vendors, and possibly a live singer performing Christmas music.
Abreu told The Herald News that the club has always organized a Christmas party for the children of its members. This year, however, organizers decided to make the gathering a community event. Before the market, approximately 100 children from foster homes will enjoy a private preview arranged through Child and Family Services, and they will receive gifts from Mr. and Mrs. Claus.
Abreu said his committee is seeking vendors who sell unique gifts and treasures. While there is no vendor fee to participate, “all they have to do to participate is donate a toy to our toy drive, and they will be able to set up their vendor spot for free,” he said. For more details, email Abreu.
Volunteers are also needed to help with various aspects of the events. Individuals who want to get involved can also email Abreu to learn about available opportunities.
