Baba's Original New York System in Providence, a historic restaurant operating since 1927, is closing permanently at the end of October after more than a century of service.
The restaurant announced on Friday, Oct. 3, via Instagram that it will stop serving its famous hot wieners on Friday, Oct. 31. The post expressed gratitude to its loyal customers for their support over the years.
The restaurant, now under the ownership of Taner Toprak, who took over the business in 2016 and renamed it, has struggled with rising food product costs, which have impacted its profitability despite maintaining traditional offerings such as "all the way" wieners and coffee milk.
According to a Providence Business News report, in April 2024, Baba's received a $10,000 grant from the Restaurant Disaster Relief Fund. The fund, established by DoorDash and partners, helped support the restaurant's operations during financial difficulties.
"From our family to yours, thank you for allowing us to be part of your lives and for making Baba's more than just a restaurant. It has been a home filled with love, laughter, and community," the post ended.
Baba's Original New York System is at 424 Smith St. in Providence.
