Originally headed to Bermuda, the Norwegian Aqua was diverted to Boston for the day on Tuesday, Sept. 30, as a safety measure amid impending severe weather from Hurricane Humberto and Tropical Storm Imelda in the tropics. Additionally, the Norwegian Escape's itinerary was modified due to forecast projections.
Many passengers, primarily from the Northeast, viewed the change as an unexpected adventure, despite the shift from tropical destinations to Boston.
“I am fine with it. I feel bad for the people in Bermuda who are getting hit with hurricanes,” said William Dulmage, a passenger visiting from New York, in a statement shared with 7NEWS Boston. “I'm still on a cruise, drinking and eating and having a good time.”
While passengers expressed understanding of the safety reasons for diverting the ship, they criticized the late notice of the detour. Some said they were not informed about the change in itinerary until they arrived at the terminal or were boarding the ship.
“The guest services line was so long because everyone wanted to yell about it,” said Allison Dezi, who's visiting from Connecticut, in a statement shared with 7NEWS Boston.
A spokesperson for Norwegian Cruise Line responded by saying, “The safety and security of our guests, crew, and the communities we visit are always a top priority.”
Passengers received a 10% discount on their next voyage. Some expressed hopes for additional compensation or offers from Norwegian Cruise Line for the inconvenience they experienced on the cruise.
