Poll Shows Cape Cod Residents Support Proposed Bourne, Sagamore Bridge Replacements
According to a recent poll, Cape Cod residents like two proposed designs for replacing the community’s Bourne and Sagamore bridges.
The poll, conducted by the Cape Cod and Islands Association of Realtors (CCIAOR) and the Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce, revealed that 86% of residents in Barnstable, Dukes, and Nantucket counties support the new bridge designs. Plans for the replacement bridges call for two, one-way spans and dedicated turn lanes.
The survey, conducted from Dec. 5 to Dec. 10, 2024, used phone and online communications to solicit the opinions of 444 registered voters of the Cape and Islands.
“The bridges are simply obsolete. They were built in the 1930s and were not designed for today’s cars, sport utility vehicles, or trucks,” said Ryan Castle, chief executive officer of CCIAOR, in a report published by CapeCod.com. “This poll shows near universal support for the plan to create wider bridges that can handle the cars that cross them daily.”
The bridge replacement project is in the environmental review phase to evaluate its potential impacts on wetlands. According to the CapeCod.com report, the project will take about 10 years to complete and cost an estimated $4.5 billion. Funding for the Sagamore Bridge replacement has been secured through federal and state sources. The Bourne Bridge project, however, has yet to receive funding.
