Flying from New Bedford to Boston? Twice-Daily Flights to Logan Could Be in the Works

Officials at Boston's Logan International Airport are considering a proposal to add twice-daily flights from the New Bedford Airport to Logan. The announcement was made during a city councilors' meeting on Wednesday, Feb. 26.

Airport Manager Scot Servis said that one of the airport's tenants has submitted a letter of intent, although the official notice has not been made. The proposal would mean offering two daily flights from New Bedford to Boston, one in the morning and one in the afternoon.

Servis told SouthCoast Today that airport officials have begun re-federalizing security at New Bedford Airport by collaborating with the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) to enhance passenger screening.

“It does open a new opportunity for New Bedford Airport that we can start doing flights to Boston. Having the TSA checkpoint also helps us with trying to solicit new airlines, new service, and getting new passengers through the building,” he said. In addition, the initiative would boost business and vacation travel by providing access to the international terminal in Boston to board international flights.

Assistant Airport Manager Michael Crane said the New Bedford to Boston service would operate year-round. “The wonderful benefit to that would be to park in New Bedford, clear TSA with only a handful of other passengers, fly to Boston, and you're already past security. So, you don't have to deal with Boston traffic or Boston TSA,” Crane added.

Servis noted that the proposed ticket price for the flight would be $90 per ticket. “When you take into account how much you would pay to park in Boston and the aggravation and time it takes to get there, ultimately, it is a savings,” he added.

More details on the new flight offering are expected to follow once an official announcement is made.
