A group of twelve mixed breed dogs - mostly hounds and beagles - arrived at the MSPCA Northeast Animal Shelter in Salem last Sunday. They were among a bigger group saved from terrible conditions in South Carolina.

During last week's Missed Connections adoption event, five dogs found their forever homes. The other seven need to finish required state quarantine and health screenings before meeting possible adopters.

"It's far too many dogs for them to care for, so when our transport partners in the area reached out for help, we knew we needed to step up and make it happen despite our own capacity challenges," said MSPCA-Angell Vice President of Animal Protection Mike Keiley said in a statement.

These rescued dogs, between one and ten years old, still need to be fixed. Some need dental care too. The sudden increase has overwhelmed South Carolina shelters that were already full.

In the north, things aren't much better. MSPCA's intake jumped 22% just last year - meaning 900 more cats and dogs than normal filling their shelters.

"Now it's more vital than ever that people step forward and adopt any of the dogs in our care," Keiley stressed. "We can't help more animals until we find homes for our current residents."

At the Salem shelter, workers carefully pair pets with families, considering lifestyle and living situations. Every animal gets a complete medical and behavior check.

Just weeks ago, the shelter welcomed 37 cats escaping bad winter weather in Louisiana. They often work with rescue groups across the country when emergencies happen.

The adoption process begins with trained staff who show basic pet care. Their help continues after adoption, with workers ready to answer questions about raising pets.
