JFK Library Closes, Reopens After Executive Order Forces Staff Layoffs
Boston’s JFK Presidential Library closed its doors Tuesday when nine employees were let go due to a White House order. The facility was back up and running by Wednesday morning.
“Due to executive order, the JFK Library is closed until further notice,” said a library spokesperson to Boston 25 News.
Staff found out about their termination during an emotional meeting. “Other guests were walking toward us as they were being escorted out of the building, it was crazy,” said Kristen Peryer to WCVB.
Jack Schlossberg, the president’s grandson, blamed the White House director of presidential libraries for these cuts. “It has nothing to do with government efficiency, the workers who were fired today actually bring in revenue for the government,” said Schlossberg to WCVB.
State officials spoke out against the move. “Donald Trump and Elon Musk’s thoughtless crusade has caused an iconic institution and economic driver to close in Massachusetts,” said Gov. Maura Healey to Boston 25 News.
The timing angered Senator Ed Markey. “The day after President’s Day, Trump’s DOGE has arbitrarily fired staff at the JFK Presidential Library, forcing it to close its doors,” said Markey to WCVB.
This impressive building, designed by renowned architect I.M. Pei, is one of 16 presidential libraries managed by the National Archives. It attracts visitors from around the world.
National Archives officials confirmed they’re ready to welcome visitors again. Following the sudden layoffs, the JFK Library Foundation promised to support both the institution and impacted workers.
Visitors were greeted by unexpected notices at the entrance. “There were signs all over the front door which said ‘closed due to executive order’, that was surprising,” said Jennifer Schaeffer to WCVB.
