Valentine's Day

Various Valentine’s Day gifts, boxes, and candies stuffed into a garbage can and surrounded by other trash.

Valentine's Day: a celebration of love, affection, and all things heart-shaped. Yet, some folks treat it like a root canal appointment. I don't get it. It's a day dedicated to love! What's not to adore?

A recent study revealed that Massachusetts ranked among the top 20 states dreading Valentine's Day, with over 300,000 negative searches—454.57 per 100,000 residents. That's a lot of anti-cupid sentiment in the Bay State.

So, why the all the hate for Valentine's Day?

Some argue it's become too commercialized, with an emphasis on expensive gifts and grand gestures. A survey found that 64% of respondents think Valentine's Day is overrated. Others feel it creates pressure and unrealistic expectations, leading to disappointment. For singles, the day can highlight loneliness, making them feel excluded from the festivities.

But here's my take: Valentine's Day is the perfect holiday.

First off, the colors—pink and red—are fabulous. They brighten up the dreariest month of the year. And let's talk about the perks: flowers and chocolate. Who can resist? Chocolate is practically a love language.

Beyond the sweets and blooms, it's a day to express love—not just romantic love, but also appreciation for friends and family. Remember those elementary school days, exchanging valentines with classmates? The "I choo-choo-choose you" cards? Pure, unadulterated joy. Why did we ever stop? Let's bring that back, even at work. Imagine the camaraderie!

So, to all the Valentine's Day naysayers: maybe it's time to reconsider. Embrace the pink, indulge in some chocolate, and spread a little love. After all, couldn't we all use a bit more sweetness in our lives?
