Would You Ever Try A Forest Bath? You Should
If someone tells you that you need a bath, you wouldn’t take it so well, however, If someone told you that you need a forest bath, you might not know what to think.
Don’t be offended, they’re just telling you that you seem stressed and need to do something about it. There are so many ways to destress, everything from going to the gym, or going for a drive. Now thanks to people like Kate Middleton we are hearing about forest baths.
What is a forest bath?
The pastime, which originated in Japan, where it is called shinrin-yoku, is the practice of walking slowly and thoughtfully through woodlands.
The idea is to take in everything around you, including the forest’s smells, sounds, sights and textures.
And some evidence that this meditative practice can help improve heart health, and even potentially help combat cancer.
It sounds so nice and calming doesn’t it? A solo walk in the woods taking in all the sights and sounds and really appreciating your surroundings. That means no phone or music or podcasts. Just you and Mother Nature. Of course, you should have your phone with you incase of an emergency, but leave in a pocket or a bag.
Can Americans do it?
For most Americans this sounds like something we are not capable of because we are not very good at relaxing and communing with nature. We prefer activities that are less than quiet and peaceful, like the beach or an outdoor concert.
When we go for walks it’s usually around the neighborhood or on a treadmill. The idea of the forest bath is you are not doing it for exercise, you’re doing it to get rid of the stress in your life and being one with nature.
The ideal forest bath is a minimum of 30 minutes and generally like any other bath, soaking it in all by yourself. Of course, you can do it with a partner or friend, but don’t let that be a distraction from what it’s all about, taking in your environment and not gossiping or planning that night’s dinner.
Give it a try and see if you last 30 or so minutes without distractions and enjoy the wonders of the woods. It might be a magical time that’s just for you to set aside the day to day stresses of life in the modern world
