Walk Like A Penguin To Avoid Slipping On Ice
As the calendar turns to winter and all the season brings, snow, ice, blizzards and crazy low freezing temperatures, it’s time to get ready for it. One of things we hardly think about is how to avoid getting hurt by falling, but unfortunately it is a sad reality that we can’t ignore, but this year we ask you to think like a penguin.
Why a penguin you ask?
We would have to ask, have you ever seen a penguin fall and slip on the ice? The answer is probably no and there’s a good reason for that, they know how to walk on ice and snow. So, we need to learn from these quirky birds that don’t fly but manage to quite well on their two feet.
According to the Mayo Clinic, roughly 800,000 people a year need medical attention after a slip or fall. And in these winter months, with icy conditions, it can be especially dangerous.
Did you know that the best way to walk on ice, is to walk like a PENGUIN? Changing your stride on ice can really make the difference, and help keep you from falling.
Here’s how to do the penguin walk:
1. Keep your knees relaxed, in an active position, so you’re ready to react.
2. Point your feet slightly outward. Get in your waddle stance.
3. Walk slowly while SHUFFLING your feet. Small shuffle steps are best.
4. Keep your center of gravity over your feet. So you might even be leaning forward a little bit.
The reason these small, shuffling steps work is because of friction and gravity. The larger your steps, the more force, which increases the likelihood of a fall.
So remember this winter when you come upon ice on the sidewalks and driveways to channel your inner penguin and avoid a potential disastrous fall. Feel free to share this article with friends and family and we can start a whole trend this winter.
