The 5 Worst Things You Can Do at Your Office Holiday Party
If your office is having a holiday party this, congrats for working at a company that still has them, and now to make sure that you will have a job after the party, we present the 5 worst things you can do at one.
An H.R. expert who’s been at it for two decades came up with a list of the top things you should NOT do at your office holiday party this month.
She says even if you’re a model employee, doing any of these things can wreck your reputation and damage your career.
If you can avoid #1 on the list, you’ll have a much better chance of avoiding the rest. Here are the top five.
Here are the Top 5 Worst Things you can do at your office Holiday Party
1. Don’t get hammered. A strategy called “zebra striping” was in the news last week. It’s when you drink, but your next drink has to be something like soda or water. You just can’t have two boozy drinks in a row. Having more than 3 drinks is pretty risky. You don’t want the boss to think that outside of the office you are a big drinker.
2. Don’t overshare. The vibe might be casual, but remember you’re still at work. Remember that these are co-workers not friends and family. Sure, you may be friendly with people at work, but oversharing is not good, keep a little mystery and professionalism.
3. Don’t mix business and romance. A.k.a., don’t make out with the person who sits two cubicles down from you. If you have a certain chemistry with someone at work, keep it out of work and that includes a holiday party.
4. Don’t ignore the dress code. The stakes aren’t as high with that one. But it’s never a good look to show up underdressed. This also includes dressing too silly, like a corny Christmas sweater or a plaid outfit that makes you look like an unwrapped gift. A small nod to the holidays is all you need, for guys a festive tie and for the ladies, a nice holiday pin or earrings will do nicely.
5. Don’t post without consent. Don’t share photos or videos of other people on social media, unless you know they’re cool with it. That includes footage of co-workers who DO get hammered. Always ask your co-workers if it’s okay to “go public” with the pics first.
