Looking for a no-fail gift this holiday season? Restaurant gift cards are the crowd-pleasing choice that checks all the boxes! They’re thoughtful, convenient, and—let’s be real—deliciously practical.

A new survey by the National Restaurant Association reveals that 59% of adults plan to give restaurant gift cards this year. And it’s the younger generations, especially Gen Z (74%) and Millennials (70%), leading the charge.

Restaurant gift cards are the perfect blend of ease and personal touch. Michelle Korsmo, President & CEO of the National Restaurant Association, puts it best: "A restaurant gift card creates valuable memories for friends and family." Plus, nearly half of adults choose these cards because they’re flexible and hassle-free. It’s a win-win—gift-givers love how simple they are, and recipients adore the chance to enjoy a meal out.

Who’s Giving and Getting?

Younger adults dominate the restaurant gift card game:

  • Gen Z: 74% plan to gift one, mostly to their friends or peers.
  • Millennials: 70% are in the same boat. This group loves giving (and receiving!) these cards across generations.
  • Older Generations: Gen Xers (54%) and Boomers (44%) are less likely to give them, but Boomers emphasize thoughtfulness, with 77% picking cards because they know the recipient loves dining out.

What Makes the Perfect Gift Card?

Recipients know what they want:

  • Full Meal Coverage: 81% want a gift card that pays for the entire dining experience.
  • Familiar Favorites: 77% prefer cards from restaurants they already know and love.
  • Flexibility: 76% value options for takeout or delivery—especially Millennials (82%).

Where Are They Buying?

Shoppers are scooping up restaurant gift cards from:

  • Big retailers like Walmart (55%).
  • The restaurants themselves (48%), supporting local favorites.
  • Online deals on platforms like Amazon (popular with Gen Z and Millennials).

This holiday season, give the gift of good food, good vibes, and great memories. Whether it’s for a fancy night out or cozy takeout at home, restaurant gift cards are the gift everyone wants.
