The holiday season is here. Parties, celebrations, and endless cheer are in full swing. But with all the fun comes a serious question: how do you get home safely after a night out?

Smart Start recently surveyed 1,000 Americans to find out how people handle this common dilemma. Spoiler alert: many of us aren’t as prepared as we think.

The Shocking Stats

Over 40% of people have been stranded because their designated driver didn’t stay sober. Worse, 41% admit to driving more drunk than they realized and regretting it later. That’s a dangerous mix.

So, what’s stopping people from making smarter choices? The two biggest hurdles are:

  1. Not realizing how drunk they are.
  2. Feeling unsafe using rideshares or public transit.

When it comes to post-party transportation, Americans have their preferences:

  • Designated Drivers: 30% stick with the trusted “sober buddy” plan.
  • Rideshares and Taxis: 27% opt for a quick Lyft or Uber ride.
  • Driving Themselves: 20% drive but claim to “limit their drinks.”
  • Other Options: 6% crash at a friend’s place or hotel, while 3% brave public transit or walk.

But here’s the kicker: even with plans in place, execution isn’t always perfect.

Drunk Judgement

Many people trust their judgment to decide if they’re okay to drive. Some count drinks, others go by how they feel. But confidence can be deceiving. Alcohol lowers inhibitions, and bad decisions follow.

Case in point? While 65% feel “very confident” in judging their driving ability, 41% admit they’ve driven impaired and regretted it.

Why it matters:

Drunk driving accounts for 32% of all traffic deaths. Most respondents (80%) are aware of these risks, yet too many still gamble with their lives—and others’.

The Bottom Line:

If you’re celebrating this season, think ahead. Stick to your plan, whether it’s a designated driver, a rideshare, or crashing somewhere safe. And remember, no party is worth a life-changing mistake.

Make this holiday season one to remember for all the right reasons.
