This Is Massachusetts Favorite Gas Station
We are very particular when it comes to which gas station we prefer to frequent when it’s time to fill our tanks with gas and our bellies with food and drink.
There’s a certain loyalty we feel about our favorite place to fill up. The reasons are because of everything from the price of gas to the variety of coffee urns they offer.
A company asked 2,500 Americans to talk about their favorite gas station chains, and then they mapped the top choices for each state. Here’s what they found:
Cumby’s it is for New England!
For all of New England the hands down favorite gas station is Cumberland Farms, of as we say “Cumby’s”. There are over 550 across the country with the most (over 200) in Massachusetts.
According to their official website: Founded in 1938 in Cumberland, Rhode Island as a one-cow dairy farm, Cumberland Farms eventually grew to become the largest dairy farm operation in Massachusetts. In the late 1950s, Cumberland Farms opened its first dairy store in Bellingham, Massachusetts, soon after adding a range of products, making it New England’s first true convenience store. With some 400 stores by the late 1960s, the convenience store retailer was among the industry leaders. In its early years, Cumberland Farms relied heavily on the sale of gallon and half-gallon jugs of milk, but soon ventured into gasoline sales. In 1970, Cumberland Farms added the first self-serve gasoline pump to one of its convenience stores, which quickly turned into 100 stores with gas facilities by 1975.
In the South, Buc-ee’s dominates the gas station game by essentially doubling as a shopping mall. AMPM and QuikTrip also ranked high.
In the Northeast, many people are looking for sandwiches, and they can find hoagies and breakfast sandwiches at Wawa. West Virginia loves Sheetz, which also got high marks for food.
In the Midwest, people put an emphasis on pizza, which makes Casey’s General Store a hit . . . and generous rewards programs, which Speedway does well. Also, in Wisconsin, people like the local dairy products at Kwik Trip.
In the West, the two most popular are Circle K for its snacks . . . hot food . . . “availability and accessibility.” And there’s also Maverik, which carries gear for hiking and camping and other outdoor essentials.
They only asked about gas station chains WITH convenience stores . . . so smaller local stations, and bigger places like the gas at Costco weren’t included.

The Cost of Gasoline The Year You Were Born
In the midst of Russia’s war on Ukraine and sanctions against Russia levied by the United States and the European Union, gas prices are climbing. On March 6, 2022, the national average price of gas per gallon surpassed $4.00, inching closer by the day to topping the highest-recorded average of $4.114 set in 2008, according to AAA. Some industry experts project the national average to remain above $4.00 until November 2022.
For nearly every mile driven, American consumers find themselves inextricably linked to a complex global commodity that can have a major impact on the cost of cruising: fuel. But that may change in the coming decades. With electric vehicles becoming more common as the auto industry shifts to reduce its high impact on climate change, other sectors will be affected. In just a few decades, the new car market will look radically different than it does today, and the gas and oil industries, whose fortunes are tied to the auto industry, will also experience radical change.
Most of the time, both the highs and the lows of gas prices are out of drivers’ hands. During the Arab-Israeli War in 1973, Arab oil manufacturers banned exports to the U.S. due to their support of Israel, leading to a gas shortage and sky-high prices. In recent years, an increase in demand for oil in developing economies alongside an expansion in production from countries (like the U.S.) that once imported most of their oil, led to a sharp drop in oil prices. In the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic, stay-at-home orders caused oil prices to crater as demand for oil bottomed out.
To find out more about how the price of gas changed throughout the years, Stacker ran the numbers on the cost of a gallon of gasoline for each of the last 84 years. Using data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (last updated in August 2021), we analyzed the average price for a gallon of unleaded regular gasoline from 1976 to 2021 along with the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for unleaded regular gasoline from 1937 to 1976, including the absolute and inflation-adjusted prices for each year.
