Cyndi Lauper performs on the Pyramid Stage during day four of Glastonbury Festival 2024 at Worthy Farm, Pilton on June 29, 2024 in Glastonbury, England.
As she tours the country one more time, almost all of these most requested Cyndi Lauper songs have made her setlist. The Girls Just Wanna Have Fun Tour is crossing the United States for the next two months before she heads to Europe to say goodbye to fans there.
I’ve always been a big fan of her music, but I’m a bigger fan of the person she is. Cyndi Lauper has given back, giving her time and money to dozens of charities over the years. And while other acts from the 80s realize they can charge fans hundreds of dollars for tickets, concerts on her farewell tour have started in the $25 range.
The 10 Cyndi Lauper songs you’re still calling for
Since hitting our airwaves 40 years ago, these are the 10 Cyndi Lauper songs that still get the most requests in 2024.
#10: I Drove All Night
Originally a Roy Orbison song in the 80s, Cyndi liked this song because she liked the idea of a woman driving and being in control. In 1992, it was her last Top 10 hit here in the U.S.
#9: We Are The World
Cyndi’s bracelets and other jewelry were a problem during the recording of this song for USA For Africa. But once they came off, her part with Huey Lewis was unforgettable.
#8: All Through The Night
This one wasn’t originally a song for Cyndi either. Even after it was written and recorded by Jules Shear, the Cars covered it first. But Cyndi’s version in 1983 became her 4th Top 10 hit.
#7: Change of Heart
Did you know The Bangles sang background vocals on the original recording of this one?
#6: The Goonies ‘R’ Good Enough
Cyndi refused to play this one live for years. She hated it! But fans kept asking for it. She does include it on her farewell tour setlist.
#5: Money Changes Everything
Did you know this one’s a cover? It was a song by a band called The Brains in 1978. But Cyndi had a big hit with it 5 years later.
#4: True Colors
Like many of Cyndi’s songs on this top 10, this is another one that wasn’t originally intended for her. Anne Murray passed on this one. The hit from 1986 has become an anthem for equal rights in the gay community. Cyndi later founded the True Colors Fund to help homeless gay youth.
#3: She Bop
Yes the song is exactly what you think it’s about. Even more taboo, Cyndi revealed in an interview with Howard Stern that she recorded the song completely naked!
#2: Time After Time
This ended up being of the last songs on Cyndi’s album “She’s So Unusual.” Even the title of the song was a “temporary placeholder.” Cyndi saw a movie in TV Guide with the name. Eventually she intended to go with something else but obviously that never happened.
#1: Girls Just Want To Have Fun
No surprise here right? Cyndi’s most requested signature song has been a mainstay on our playlist for decades. Over 30 artists have covered the song and it’s one of only a handful of music videos with over a billion views on YouTube.
