Happy National Chicken Wing Day!  The mayor of Buffalo, New York declared it a holiday in 1977.  So it's the 48th year it's been celebrated. Which is hard to believe when you think about it because for folks outside of the Buffalo region, wings didn't become a sensation until the 80's.

Prior to that people didn't eat wings much, we pretty much stuck to drumsticks from KFC along with the thighs and breasts of course. We didn't have exotic sauces to slather the chicken pieces with, they were just greasy and finger licking good.

Thanks to the genius of a Buffalo bar and restaurant we were introduces to these wonderfully lip smacking treat. Now you have so many other options to soak your wings in, everything from Korean BBQ to Carolina Reaper Sauce, there's a sauce for every taste and desire.

A group that tracks America's eating habits found we've eaten 1.3 BILLION of them in the past 12 months, up 5% year-over-year.  If you want to help add to that total, a bunch of places have deals today.  Here are a few big ones . . .

1.  Wingstop has free wings with any purchase.  Order online or through their app and use the code "FREEWINGS".  You can tack on five wings for free.

2.  Buffalo Wild Wings has free wings if you spend $10.  Use the code "GOWINGS" and get six free wings with your order.

3.  Applebee's has a buy-one-get-one deal if you order through their app and use the code "WINGDAY24".

4.  Popeyes has a buy-one-get-one deal.  Buy six wings and get another six for $1.

5.  Hooters has a similar deal, but you better be hungry.  Buy 10 wings, and get another 10 for free.  ("USA Today" did a big list with even more deals.)
